‘Closed my eyes and asked myself…’: Suryakumar reacts to IND vice-captaincy | Cricket

Suryakumar Yadav has been named the vice-captain in T20Is for India’s upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. His fans would have seen this coming as the 32-year-old will end 2022 as India’s leading run-scorer in T20I cricket. Suryakumar seems to have been rewarded for burning up the run charts this year as he scored 1164 runs in 31 matches at an average of 46.56, including two hundreds. He is the only player in Team India to cross 1000 runs in the shortest format in 2022.

The news of Suryakumar’s leadership role in Team India was given to him by his father. The right-handed batsman is currently playing for Mumbai in Ranji Trophy 2022-23 and he shared his feelings on the news of his appointment. The Times of India.

“It (vice-captaincy) was not expected, but the way the last year has been for me, I can say it is like a reward for me. I’m feeling great about it, and I’m really looking forward to it. I closed my eyes and asked myself: ‘Is this a dream?’, Suryakumar said.

“My father sent me (the team) because he is always on social media. Then, we talked to each other. He also sent me a short message: ‘Don’t take any pressure and enjoy your batting. ‘

Sri Lanka is touring India for a three-match T20I series and a three-match ODI series. Hardik Pandya has been appointed captain in T20Is and the squad for the shortest format does not include KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. However, in ODIs, Rohit will be the captain and Hardik will be his deputy.

Suryakumar also talked about teammate Hardik’s captaincy role and how he got along well with the all-rounder.

“Exactly. Our bond has always been great. We have played together a lot for India and MI. Our batting numbers are one after the other. We have batted a lot together. We complement each other .. As you have seen in the IPL, and recently, leading India, he has been a fantastic captain. So, I really enjoy playing under him,” Suryakumar said.

The 1st T20I between India and Sri Lanka will be played on Tuesday, 03 January at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
