Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara acknowledged the limits of being on a tight budget and how he was ‘caught in the middle’ during the IPL mini auction held in Kochi.
“Our main target in the first round was Brooke, but unfortunately we missed him. But we are very happy to have Jason Holder and Donovan Ferreira among a number of good players who we think are very promising. Could also meet. I think we have a good team,” Sangakkara told TOI from Kochi.
At the same time, the Royals’ coach opined, “Brook would have fit well into our side.”
Elaborating on what the thought process was like, he said, “It was about which pair would make our team better, the first XI that you fielded. And the answer was that we should target Brooke. And next was Holder or maybe Nicholas Pooran. But with a limited budget, we really had to plan it.”
The former Sri Lankan captain said they were ‘caught in the middle’. “It was a complicated kind of decision that we had to make in terms of planning for the best-case scenario and the worst-case scenario and we were caught in the middle, but we came out well prepared with a lot of planning, data and thought. Were. He. So it was a long process.”
We have the core from last season. The squad we retained was the result of our good performance last season. We’ve got the bowling, we’ve got the batting and we just need a few extra things to round it out.”
