Daniel Suárez 2022 season in review

How 2022 ended:
Power-steering issues spoiled Suarez's optimistic afternoon for the No. 99 Trackhouse Racing entry at Charlotte Roval,

with both cars nearly leading in the Round of 8. With 47 laps remaining, 12 points above the cutline,

the issue sprung up and sent Suárez and company into panic mode as they navigated through treacherous left- and right-hand turns.

Unfortunately, although Suárez put in an incredible performance to reach the checkered flag, the No. 99 team looked to be on the outside after losing pace and space.

In the final four races of the season, he finished with three top-16s. End.

Best race:
Sonoma Raceway. After reducing his raw speed at the Circuit of the Americas, Suárez's spin in the

latter half of the race resulted in an unfortunate end for the team. But as soon as the next road course came on schedule,

Suárez made amends with one of the most remarkable victories in NASCAR history.

Suárez dominated the 2.52-mile Californian circuit, leading 47 laps and taking the first win of his Cup Series career –

making him the first Mexican-born driver to win at the sport's premier level.

Stats to Know: While leading 280 laps this season, Suarez nearly matched his total in his last five Cup Series seasons combined.

Prior to 2022, he had led only 335 laps at the level and no more than 166 in a season.

His career-best 280 laps were split over 12 races in which he led the field five times for 30 or more laps.

Quotable:
"I am extremely proud to be a driver from Mexico, a driver from a different background.

I don't think the sport could have found anyone more committed to me, my culture and my background.

Looking Ahead:
In the midst of the best season of his Cup Series career, team owner Justin Marks and Suarez signed a

contract extension with Trackhouse Racing for the 2023 season, keeping the No. 99. The new contract pushes him into his third season with the team,

his longest tenure in any one organization in his major league career. Suarez should not only be a playoff contender,

but a serious threat to win several races next season following his strong showings in 2022 on a variety of tracks.
